Matthew Johnson

Operator. Strategist. Board member. Investor advisor. Executive coach.

Matt works with private equity firms, boards and C-suite leaders where commercial performance and leadership cannot be separated.

Across more than 25 years in strategy, M&A, healthcare commercialization and executive leadership, he has learned to see the full system: the asset, the operating model, the board agenda and the people accountable for delivering the result.

About Matt

An executive who followed the problem all the way through.

Strategy showed him where value could be created. Operating leadership showed him what it took to create it.

Matt began his career as an engineer, moved into international business development, and then into corporate strategy and M&A. At AmerisourceBergen Specialty Group, his work sat at the intersection of transactions and strategy work in the style of an operating partner.

He later stepped into full operating responsibility for ASD Healthcare—leading sales, finance, procurement, marketing, operations, provider solutions and customer service. That transition changed how he understood performance.

A sound strategy can still fail through execution, capital discipline, organizational behavior or leadership. Commercial problems often become people problems, and people problems ultimately show up in commercial results.

How Matt works

Analytical, direct and deeply human.

He isolates the material factors, tests assumptions and moves fluidly between market dynamics, finance, board expectations and the leadership system responsible for execution.

Healthcare, life sciences & pharma

Deep sector expertise, built from inside the system.

Matt has worked across complex therapies as a strategist, acquirer, operator, director, advisor and coach—connecting commercial strategy to the delivery systems that make access possible.

01

Product access & distribution

Specialty distribution, rare and orphan pharmacy, long-term care, compounding, sampling, reverse logistics and alternative sourcing.

02

Patient & provider services

Infusion, home infusion, HUB and patient services, physician-practice support, oncology services and direct-to-consumer models.

03

Therapies & strategy

Rare and orphan disease, oncology, cell and gene therapy, biosimilars, launches, manufacturer and payer strategy, and health economics.

04

Logistics & technology

Clinical-trial logistics, cold-chain transport, specialty shipping, healthcare data and technologies supporting commercialization.

Especially relevant when

A PE firm is evaluating a healthcare asset

A founder-led business is scaling under institutional ownership

A leadership team must translate a value-creation plan into action

A manufacturer is preparing for launch or commercialization

Strategy, M&A & value creation

A transaction should add a capability—not merely more revenue.

As Head of Strategy and M&A for AmerisourceBergen Specialty Group, Matt helped shape strategic rationale, investment approval, transaction execution, integration and portfolio direction during a period of significant growth.

01 / Diagnose

Understand how value is actually created.

Economics, customers, capabilities, constraints and the few assumptions carrying the plan.

02 / Decide

Choose the right strategic move.

Invest, acquire, build, partner, repair, sell or close—with explicit trade-offs and decision criteria.

03 / Deliver

Translate intent into operating reality.

Integration, accountability, capital discipline and leadership alignment around the value-creation agenda.

The questions that matter

How does the business really make money?

Which capabilities do customers value most?

What is limiting performance today?

Which growth paths are truly achievable?

Operating leadership

From advisor to accountable operator.

When Matt took responsibility for ASD Healthcare, the mandate began with stabilization: restore discipline, strengthen critical relationships and refocus the business on the areas where it could create the most value.

01

Protect what customers already trust.

High-touch service, complex handling, exception management and rapid issue resolution remained central.

02

Refocus on differentiated markets.

Specialty therapies, oncology, rare and orphan disease, provider connectivity and customer enablement.

03

Build a system that can scale.

Better automation, stronger first-call resolution, disciplined capital allocation and clear operating accountability.

Boards, PE & portfolio companies

Useful in the boardroom because he has carried the accountability outside it.

Matt has reported to boards, served as a director and advisor, partnered with sponsors and founders, and coached the CEOs responsible for delivering the plan.

Strategy & value creation

Clarifying the value thesis, challenging assumptions and keeping attention on the decisions that matter most.

CEO & team support

Helping leaders navigate first-time institutional ownership, changing expectations and high-consequence talent choices.

Governance & alignment

Strengthening the relationship among founders, sponsors and management while improving how the board creates value.

M&A & integration

Connecting deal logic with operating realities, leadership capacity and the practical work of integration.

Executive coaching & assessment

The hardest business problems often become people problems.

Matt coaches CEOs and C-suite leaders in private equity–backed and public-company environments. His operating background allows him to understand the commercial stakes without taking ownership away from the executive.

The work starts from coaching. Where useful—and explicitly agreed—he can bring an operator’s perspective to the decisions underneath the development agenda.

Where the work is most useful

A founder becoming a private equity–backed CEO

A first-time CEO stepping into broader accountability

A leader succeeding a founder

A senior team navigating performance or talent decisions

A strong executive moving from good to exceptional

Experience

A career built across the full value-creation arc.

Engineering discipline, transaction strategy, operating leadership, board service and executive development inform one integrated point of view.

Work with Matt

Begin with the decision—not the service category.

Whether you are evaluating a healthcare investment, supporting a portfolio CEO, building a more useful board or navigating a high-stakes senior role, start with what is happening, who is involved and what remains uncertain.

From there, Matt can help determine the right mix of advisory, board, coaching or assessment support.
